Philippine Cold Chain Project
The Philippine Cold Chain Project (PCCP) is a four (4) year project funded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food for Progress program which helps developing countries and emerging democracies modernize and strengthen their agricultural sectors.
Implemented by Winrock International Institute for Agricultural Development (WI), PCCP is operating in 260 barangays of the Caraga region which is located in the northeastern part of Mindanao.
PCCP's goal is to boost the local economy of the region by making it a future breadbasket of the Philippines.
Caraga region is one of the richest regions in natural resources. It has a large tracts of fertile land that have great capacity to produce varied commercial crops. It has a long stretchs of shoreline that promise abundance in production of fisheries and aquatic products. However, economic growth in the region remains at one of the lowest rates among the regions in Mindanao.
PCCP seeks to make a significant change in this region by increasing agricultural productivity in horticulture, meat, and fish value chains, develop cold chain food handling systems to prevent agricultural losses and expand trade of agricultural products.
PCCP works on creating and strengthening producers’ groups to increase agricultural production that meets international food safety requirements through provision of improved technologies, developing cold chain related markets, and strengthening intermediate organizations. It also works at improving productivity of selected high value commodities such as high value vegetables, bananas, mangoes, livestock, and fisheries.
